For those who do not feel at ease with the shaven look, and would prefer to use SMP to attain a thicker hair appearance to their existing hair, then this can be achieved by embedding pigments under the current hair to create the fuller look. And you don’t need to shave your head for this.  
Though there are some stipulations in order for the technique to be realized effectively. 
A client should have a relatively good front hair line, is comfortable with keeping their hair line at its current position and has a minimum of 50% coverage in the crown area.

For men with thinning crowns, as long as he has reasonable coverage, SMP can be used to lessen the contrast between the thicker hair and the scalp, creating the appearance of the hair being fuller.

It’s important to note that Ladies suffer hair loss in a different way to men and this has to be taken into consideration when planning SMP.  Ladies thinning tends to be more diffuse and general, and any natural parting areas widen over time to reveal more scalp. 
For men, the aim is to create the illusion of hair follicles. For women, the aim is to conceal the look of thinning hair by shading in the area which is becoming thin, thus giving the distinct appearance of thicker hair.

Alopecia is considered an autoimmune condition, which may start with small patches of hair loss, usually in one or more coin-sized areas on the scalp and at times across the body including the beard, eyebrows, eyelashes or body hair. 
The cells from the immune system (T cell called NKG2D+ T cells) gather around the hair follicles. These cells attack the follicle, preventing it from growing hair. It is not totally understood what makes the immune system attack healthy follicles, or even if the cause stems from inside the body (perhaps an infection) or outside the body (environmental) but it could easily be both.
Currently, there’s no known cure, however, the good news is the follicles are generally not destroyed, so hair does have a chance to re-grow. Though, it could be patchy regrowth and cannot be guaranteed. Some people do achieve full regrowth though once the condition has developed to Alopecia Totalis or Alopecia Universalis, the chances of full regrowth become less. It is also quite common for people with Alopecia Areata to experience intermittent hair loss throughout their lives. 
SMP Treatment
The first step is a consultation to see how SMP would benefit you. Exact requirements will depend on the individual. Fundamentally, there are two options. To treat the bald patches in order to disguise tehdiferneces between the hair and the bald patches, or to treat the whole scalp.
